Monitoring pelagic Sargassum inundation potential for coastal communities

نویسندگان

چکیده

Pelagic Sargassum is a buoyant macroalgae that forms rafts at the ocean surface and serves as biologically rich habitat for hundreds of diverse marine species. Since 2011, massive blooms have occurred in tropical Atlantic swept through western Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, Gulf Mexico. These recurring annual events caused significant disruptions to coastal communities throughout region, negatively impacting human health, tourism, fishing, navigation, nearshore ecosystems. We present here Inundation Report (SIR), product uses satellite-based methodology estimate predict future inundation pelagic Sargassum. Results from one year SIRs show strong spatiotemporal differences potential across Intra-American Seas, provide comprehensive method assessing its geographic distribution temporal variation. Comparisons opportunistically collected photographs indicate qualitative concordance between satellite situ observations. This work highlights value observations, basin-wide seasonal monitoring, emphasises need sub-regional weekly forecasting. considerable promise tool can eventually incorporate improved resolution imagery, circulation, wind, wave conditions forecast movement into areas.

Tsunami Inundation Mapping for Alaska Communities

Alaska has the greatest tsunami potential in the entire United States. Historic tsunamis generated by earthquakes on the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone have resulted in widespread damage and loss of life along the Alaskan Pacific coast and other places located at exposed locations around the Pacific Ocean. Large seismic events occurring in the vicinity of the Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Islands...

Elevation Uncertainty in Coastal Inundation Hazard Assessments

Coastal inundation has been identified as an important natural hazard that affects densely populated and built-up areas (Subcommittee on Disaster Reduction, 2008). Inundation, or coastal flooding, can result from various physical processes, including storm surges, tsunamis, intense precipitation events, and extreme high tides. Such events cause quickly rising water levels. When rapidly rising w...

Incorporating DEM Uncertainty in Coastal Inundation Mapping

Coastal managers require reliable spatial data on the extent and timing of potential coastal inundation, particularly in a changing climate. Most sea level rise (SLR) vulnerability assessments are undertaken using the easily implemented bathtub approach, where areas adjacent to the sea and below a given elevation are mapped using a deterministic line dividing potentially inundated from dry area...

Impacts of Coastal Inundation Due to Climate Change in a CLUSTER of Urban Coastal Communities in Ghana, West Africa

The increasing rates of sea level rise caused by global warming within the 21st century are expected to exacerbate inundation and episodic flooding tide in low-lying coastal environments. This development threatens both human development and natural habitats within such coastal communities. The impact of sea level rise will be more pronounced in developing countries where there is limited adapt...

Identification areas with inundation potential for urban runoff harvesting using the support vector machine model

Rainfall-runoff from urban areas is one of the available water resources, which is wasted due to lack of attention and proper management. Besides, urban runoff excess of drains capacity causing many problems including inundation and urban environmental pollution. Therefore, harvesting this runoff can provide a part of the required water in urban areas, and also reduce flood and urban inund...
